Comprehensive DOT drug testing is a vital part of every transportation company’s DOT drug and alcohol compliance program, and all drivers or employers of drivers with a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) are required by law to follow specific drug testing procedures set by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration (FMCSA). DOT drug testing rules govern what types of drugs drivers should be tested for, when and how often tests should be administered, what facilities can actually perform a DOT-approved drug test, the components of a trucking company’s Drug Free Workplace program, and more.
Before operating a vehicle that requires a Commercial Driver’s License, all owner operators or employees must complete a pre-employment drug test and return negative results.
To remain DOT compliant, both owner operators and employees of transportation companies must join a consortium pool and submit for random drug tests throughout the year.
Depending on the type of accident and the injuries sustained by those involved, drivers may be asked to take an immediate drug and alcohol tests to determine individual liability.
If an employer has reason to suspect an employee may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol in the workplace, the employee in question may be asked to take a drug or alcohol test.
If a driver has previously tested positive for drugs or alcohol, he or she must first return a negative result on a “return-to-duty” drug test before resuming workplace responsibilities.
Drivers that have successfully completed the return-to-duty process (including a negative return-to-duty test) must be tested several times over the course of the following year.
To remain compliant with DOT rules and regulations, all transportation companies or owner operators with a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) must follow basic drug testing and policies and procedures. OACH provides all types of DOT-required testing, including pre-employment testing, random selection, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-work, and follow up drug testing, as well as management tools and reports to help companies stay organized.
Employees selected for drug testing, either randomly or as part of a pre employment screening, must proceed immediately to one of OACH's convenient testing site. OACH's testing site is held to rigorous standards to ensure accuracy when administering tests for the following classes of drugs:
Whether drug test results are positive or negative, OACH is careful to protect client confidentiality and results are always sent through proper channels to maintain discretion. If tests return a positive result, our certified Medical Review Officer (MRO) will contact the employee to determine if any medical reasons may have affected the test, such as taking prescription medication; if no acceptable reason is found, the employee should be removed from performing safety-sensitive duties and management should consult the OACH Drug and Alcohol Policy program policy to determine the next steps.
OACH provides owner operators with the testing services they need to stay DOT compliant, including pre-employment testing, post accident testing, and random selection testing.
